HIV tests did not have an effect on the athletes’ participation in diving contests. Louganis was able to participate for many years after knowing his STD in 1988. That year, on his way to winning gold medals, he bumped his skull on a springboard in a dive, thus contaminating the swimming pool with blood. Nothing much was made out of the event because his HIV-positive status hadn’t been revealed at this point. However, it if it had been disclosed, the objection against his sports participation would’ve been intense.
